The Reds were blanked 8-0 by the Mariners in the opener of a three-game series in Seattle heard late last night on WRBI. The Mariners snapped a scoreless tie when they plated an unearned run off Reds starter and loser Andrew Abbott (5-6) in the 5th inning, and put the game away with a six-run 7th highlighted by a Cal Raleigh grand slam off reliever Caleb Ferguson. Abbott deserved a better fate; he allowed the unearned run with four hits, two walks and six strikeouts over six innings. The Reds will try to even the series tonight when they send All-Star righthander Chase Burns (11-1, 2.54 ERA) to the mound. He’ll be opposed by former Reds ace Luis Castillo (3-8, 4.93 ERA). Alex Palou won IndyCar’s weather-delayed Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway yesterday. The race, which was postponed from Sunday due to heavy rain, was shortened to 225 laps because of extreme heat. Palou was able to hold off Josef Newgarden and David Malukas in the closing laps. It’s his fifth win of the season, and he continues to lead Malukas and Kyle Kirkwood in the IndyCar point standings. The series heads to Portland August 9.
The Indiana University men’s basketball team is set to play this season at what’s billed as the “World’s Most Famous Arena.” The Hoosiers will take on the Arkansas Razorbacks at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The game at MSG is set for November 17.
