(Decatur County, IN) – The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office says a familiar scam recently resurfaced.
Deputies say someone claiming to be a sheriff’s office employee is calling residents, telling them there’s an active warrant for their arrest.
The reasons for the “warrant” include missing jury duty, and unpaid traffic tickets stemming from construction zone violations.
The sheriff’s office says it will never call you to demand payment; request payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or payment apps, or threaten immediate arrest if a payment is not made over the phone.
If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately; don’t provide personal or financial information, and do not send money or make payments.

If you believe you have been the victim of this scam or have information that may help identify those responsible, you’re asked to the sheriff’s office as soon as possible.
“Please help us protect our community by sharing this alert with your family, friends, and neighbors—especially elderly individuals who are often targeted by these types of scams,” reads a statement from the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office.
