(Greensburg, IN) – The inaugural Walk with Care event that took place last Saturday on the Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) Walking Trail raised more than $5,000 for the hospital foundation’s Cancer Care Fund.
More than 45 community members participated.
The Hospital Foundation of Decatur County’s Cancer Care Fund supports patients and families navigating cancer at DCMH by providing financial assistance for treatment-related expenses and other essential needs that ease the burden of a cancer diagnosis.
The event invited people of all ages to join the walk, purchase Walk with Care T-shirts sold in advance to raise funds, or to donate directly to the fund.
Admission was free, but free-will donations were accepted.
Proceeds from Walk with Care stay local through the hospital foundation’s Cancer Care Fund.
“It was incredibly meaningful to see our community come together in support of one another,” said Hospital Foundation of Decatur County Director Mandy Lohrum. “Many of those who walked with us were former or current cancer patients and have experienced the cancer journey personally or have supported someone they love through it.”
This event raises awareness for cancer, celebrates the lives of loved ones, and brings the community together.
“Support from our community helps patients focus on healing,” said Erin Alloway, Cancer Care Manager at DCMH. “Funds raised through Walk with Care help ease some of the financial burdens patients may face and remind them and their families that they are not facing this journey alone. As we celebrate our first year of Walk with Care, we hope this event becomes an annual tradition that brings our community together to honor our patients, celebrate their strength, and recognize the battles they have faced and continue to face.”
Participants also enjoyed refreshments from Kona Ice of Shelby County and Sippin’ Purty, helping walkers stay cool throughout the event.
Event sponsors included Enneking Auto Body, German American Bank, Great Plains Communications, Greensburg Community High School, Off Duty Lawn Care, and PowerStream Fiber Energized by Decatur County REMC.
The Hospital Foundation of Decatur County thanks everyone who walked, donated, volunteered, and sponsored the event.
“The community’s generosity is making a meaningful difference for local cancer patients and families throughout their journey,” reads a statement from the organization.
