(Batesville, IN) – 5 Oaks Garden Center in Batesville is under new ownership.
After 36 years at the helm, Matt and Marla Nobbe have sold the business Batesville native Blake Belter as they prepare to step into retirement.
For many Southeastern Indiana families, 5 Oaks has become a familiar part of the seasons, from selecting vegetables and flowers in the spring to picking out pumpkins each fall.
What began in 1989 as a single greenhouse and a mission to “keep gardening affordable for everyone” eventually grew into a premier garden center.
The Nobbes expanded the business to include eight greenhouses and a full-service retail operation serving customers throughout Southeastern Indiana and beyond.
“When we started 36 years ago in Oldenburg and quickly outgrew that space, we built our new garden center in the middle of a field of weeds. A lot of people told us years later that they thought, ‘What are those kids thinking?’ It just goes to show that opportunity is available for all of us if we are willing to work for it,” Matt Nobbe said. “It’s been fun to see the third generation of young gardeners now coming in. We are so proud of Blake and know we’re leaving our dream in the best hands possible.”
In addition to supporting local schools, teams, clubs, and events, the Nobbes also hosted pumpkin carving contests, cookouts, and vegetable-growing competitions that became traditions for many families.
Matt and Marla Nobbe say they are confident 5 Oaks will continue serving Batesville and the surrounding area for years to come, with the same commitment to quality plants, knowledgeable service, and community involvement.
“5 Oaks was one of my favorite places to go when I was younger, and then I started working here when I was fifteen,” said Belter. “I remember one day Matt jokingly said, ‘You could work here a few years and then take it over!’ He probably didn’t think anything of that comment at the time, but it stuck with me. I decided to study Horticulture at Purdue University so I could learn more and keep building on what Matt and Marla have created. There’s a lot to learn, but I’m excited.”
Looking back over the last 36 years, the Nobbes say they are thankful for all of their customers, employees, suppliers, and friends who have been a part of the 5 Oaks story, and look forward to watching the business thrive in the future.
