(Batesville, IN) – The Batesville Community School Corporation (BCSC) says a clerical error was discovered after the recent commencement that affected the final Grade Point Average (GPA) of a member of the Batesville High School Class of 2026.

It was determined that Grace Walter, who was originally recognized as salutatorian at graduation, earned a final GPA that allowed her to share the valedictorian distinction with fellow graduate Tyler Hoff.

School officials communicated directly with the students and families involved, and say all records will be updated to accurately reflect this designation.

Because Walter and Hoff will share the title of valedictorian, no salutatorian will be named.

“The school corporation takes full responsibility for the error in this extremely competitive GPA situation involving students within fractions of a point from each other,” said BCSC Superintendent Dr. Katy Eastes. “Academic honors such as valedictorian represent years of dedication, perseverance, and excellence. We deeply regret that this error occurred and that one of our students was not appropriately recognized at graduation.”

Dr. Eastes added that the district is reviewing its procedures and safeguards when it comes to determining class ranking distinctions.

“While we cannot change what happened during commencement, we can acknowledge our mistake, correct the record, and celebrate the outstanding achievements of both students,” Eastes said. “I have been impressed by the grace and understanding demonstrated by the students and their families throughout this process. Both co-valedictorians have earned the respect and admiration of
our school community, and we are incredibly proud of all they have accomplished.”
