Joseph William “Joe” Smith, 95, of Aurora passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at The Waters of Dillsboro. Joe was born on Thursday, May 14, 1931, in Lawrenceburg; son of Stanley and Martha (Powell) Smith. Joe retired as a maintenance supervisor at Jewish hospital after many years. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Farmers Retreat and volunteered at the Dillsboro Food Pantry. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Lawrenceburg American Legion Post #239. He married Shirley (Bauer) Smith, and she preceded him on August 29, 2023. He and his wife Shirley were owners of Paint-n-Putter on second street in Aurora, then later moved the business to their home. Joe enjoyed model trains and flying model airplanes. Joe also loved going fishing and hunting in Canada.
Joe will be missed by his son Thomas “Tom” (Diane) Smith of Osgood; daughter Jenna “Janie” Atkinson of South Carolina; sister Penny (Tom) Richason; niece Shelley Johnson; grandchildren Jillian (Jack) Theuerling and Dylan (Liz) Werner; and great-grandchild Lark Michael.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Martha Smith; wife Shirley Smith; sons Michael, Rusty, and Dan Smith; granddaughter Alyssa Atkinson; sister Ruth Nelson; and son-in-law Allen Atkinson.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 10:00-11:00AM, Monday, May 25, 2026, at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmers Retreat: 7291 IN-62, Dillsboro, IN 47018. Services will follow at 11:00 AM with Rev. Jared Tucher officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery with military rites provided by the Dillsboro American Legion Post #292. Memorials may be given in honor of Joe to St. John Lutheran Church.
