Mary DeBurger, 93, Osgood

Mary Ellen Hockersmith DeBurger, 93, of Osgood passed away on April 25, 2026. She entered this world on April 13, 1933 to her parents Leora Black Hockersmith and Ernest Hockersmith. She grew up in the Rexville area and attended New Marion Schools, graduating in 1951. She worked in the insurance field in Indianapolis upon graduation. In 1952, she married the love of her life, Ralph DeBurger and made Osgood her home until her death. To this union were born four children Sandra DeBurger Robertson, Gary DeBurger, Sue DeBurger DiBease and Robert DeBurger. She was also mother to two step children, Larry DeBurger and Cheryl DeBurger Parker. Mary was a stay- at- home mom to her children until 1974 when she re-entered the workforce working at the Osgood IGA, Meadow Gold Dairy, and H & R Block. In the mid -1990s she opened her own business Mary’s Shoppes, where she sold gifts, gluten free food mixes, and children’s puzzles and books as well coffee and pastries. She retired from her business in 2016. Mary was well known for her sewing skills, doing alterations and making gift items for her shop. She was also known for her baking skills and many people enjoyed buying her pies for their holiday gatherings. Mary is survived by her sons Larry DeBurger, and Gary DeBurger, her daughters Cheryl Parker and Sue DiBease, and her daughter-in-law Jeanne DeBurger; 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 9 great- greatgrandchildren. Preceding in death was her husband Ralph DeBurger, her daughter Sandra Robertson, her son Robert DeBurger, and granddaughter Kit Bowermaster. Funeral services were held at the convenience of the family with burial in the Shelby Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Shelby Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home.
