(Decatur County, IN) – A Laurel woman was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital following a crash on the 2800 block of State Road 3 near North Decatur Jr./Sr. High Sunday night.

The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office says deputies arriving on the scene around 10:14 p.m. determined that a 2008 Chevrolet passenger car driven by 35-year-old Emily Nicole Howard was southbound on State Road 3 when it crossed the center line and struck a utility pole on the east side of the road.

The impact caused the car to spin around and come to rest facing north.

The vehicle sustained significant damage and caught fire, which was quickly put out by first responders.

Electrical service in the area was disrupted, which caused classes to be canceled on Monday at North Decatur Elementary and Jr./Sr. High School.

Howard was trapped in the vehicle and was removed from the wreckage by Greensburg firefighters.

The investigation into the crash continues.

Sheriffs deputies received assistance from Decatur County Communications; Decatur County EMS; the Greensburg Police Department; Greensburg Fire Department; Lifeline Medical Helicopter; Duke Energy, and Platinum Wrecker Service.

This was the second serious wreck in that area in as many weeks.
