James E. Gilbert, 73, Sunman

James Edward Gilbert, 73, of Sunman, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, March 15, 2026.

Born on June 22, 1952, in Batesville, Indiana, Jim was the son of Andrew E. and Emma (née Browning) Gilbert. He married Edna Gilbert, who preceded him in death.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Jim earned a bachelor’s degree in software engineering and built a distinguished career as a software engineer at Hill-Rom, where he contributed his expertise over many years.

Jim embraced life with enthusiasm and a deep appreciation for meaningful connections and simple joys. An avid movie enthusiast, he also had a passion for cars and delighted in thoughtful, intelligent conversations with friends and family. He cherished his regular mornings at the local diner with his friends. He also found great pleasure in traveling—particularly to China and Japan—golfing, and enjoyed a Winston cigarette. In the Dearborn County community, he was fondly remembered as a beloved Santa Claus, bringing magic and joy to schools and parties with his warm, enchanting portrayal that made every visit feel special and memorable.

He is survived by his stepson, Trent Freyer; stepdaughter, Tricia Freyer; and brothers, John Gilbert, Toby Gilbert, and Ronald Gilbert.

In addition to his parents and wife, Edna, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Norma June.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Jim will be remembered for his warmth, sharp intellect, and the quiet joy he brought to those around him.

Please feel free to leave a memory or message of comfort for Jim’s family in the online guestbook at www.meyersfuneralhomes.com.
