Longest Serving GPD K-9 Retires

(Greensburg, IN) – The Greensburg Board of Works accepted the retirement of police K-9 Kato on Tuesday night.

The K-9s handler, Greensburg Police Department Sgt. Jacob Mays, and Kato have worked together for the past six years.

Kato has served with GPD for eight years.

She’s a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois, and has logged more than 16,000 hours of service with the department.

During her time on the force, Kato has logged thousands of hours of training and is credited with the assistance of more than a hundred arrests.

Kato’s specific skills consist of Drug and Narcotics Detection, Tracking, and Suspect Apprehension.

She was was the first K-9 purchased by the Greensburg Police Department when the K-9 Program was restarted in 2018.

Kato is the longest serving K-9 unit in department history to this date.

She will retire April 1 and will stay with Sgt. Mays and his family.

“The Greensburg Police Department would like to thank K-9 Kato and Sgt. Mays as a team for the countless hours of dedicated service,” reads a statement from the city.
