Let the Pros Make the Ice Water Rescue

(Southeastern IN) – Area first responders are reminding you to never go after a pet or another person who becomes trapped on icy lakes or ponds.

This comes following a successful water rescue by the Morris Volunteer Fire Department last week of a dog that became trapped on the icy pond at Indian Lakes campground (pictured).

“Usually, this time of year, you get dogs going out on the ice and fall through. Don’t try to rescue them yourself,” said Morris Fire Chief Randy Merkel.

He says a lot of methods have been tried in similar situations over the years.

“We’ve had people use ladders and stuff, trying to go out and get a dog, and the ice gives way and they end up falling in the water, too,” Merkel said.

Instead, Chief Merkel says you should stay safe on shore, call 9-1-1 and let trained first responders conduct the rescue operation.
