Bail Bond Scam Circulating

(Decatur County, IN) – The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office says a familiar scam is circulating through the community.

Authorities say someone identifying himself as Lt. Fuller with the Sheriff’s Office is calling residents to post bond for recently jailed people using bitcoin QR codes through Walmart.

The codes are texted to the scammer through a barcode.

The phone number the scammer is calling from shows up as the “Decatur County Sheriff’s Office” with the phone number (812) 222-4911 on caller ID.

The sheriff’s office says it is very easy for scammers to spoof phone numbers, and they remind you that they will never call someone about a warrant, nor will they request money over the phone, or ask for payment via barcodes, QR codes, or gift cards.

Deputies say you should never release your personal information over the phone, or transfer funds to unverified people.

If you have been the victim of a similar crime, you’re urged to contact the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number – (812) 663-8125.
