(Southeastern IN) – With cold weather back in our area, local police agencies are warning that leaving your vehicle running to warm it up gives thieves an opportunity to steal your wheels.

Greensburg Police say leaving your vehicle running and unattended is an open invitation to car thieves.

They say it only takes seconds for someone to hop into an unlocked and running vehicle and drive away.

Authorities are offering several tips to prevent auto theft in these cold winter months:

  • Never leave your keys in the ignition if you aren’t in the driver’s seat.
  • If you’re using a remote starter, make sure your doors are locked.
  • Stay with your vehicle if you’re warming it the old-fashioned way.
