FRIENDSHIP — A camper was destroyed Sunday when high winds spread embers from a nearby burn barrel, igniting a fire along Friendship Road, authorities said.
Firefighters from the Friendship Volunteer Fire Department responded around 11:30 a.m. to the 3500 block of Friendship Road after reports of a fire. Upon arrival, crews found the camper fully involved in flames and partially collapsed, forcing them to focus on containment.
Approximately 500 gallons of water were used to extinguish the blaze and cool remaining hotspots. Officials believe gusty winds carried embers from a nearby burn barrel into dry vegetation near the camper, sparking the fire.
No injuries were reported.
The Friendship Volunteer Fire Department reminded residents to be cautious with open burning during windy conditions to prevent similar incidents.
