GOP Caucus Set to Select New Batesville Clerk-Treasurer

(Batesville, IN) – A Republican caucus will be held on Tuesday, December 23 at 9 a.m. in Batesville Council chambers at the Memorial Building to select a new city Clerk-Treasurer.

Paul Gates is retiring after 10 years on the job.

He was first elected in 2015 and is in the middle of his third term.

Candidate remarks at the caucus are open to the public.

Following that, a private vote will be taken and the winner will be announced right after.

The Clerk-Treasurer department’s duties are two-fold, according to the City of Batesville’s website.

As Treasurer, the department is responsible for the overall financial well-being of the City, including annual budget preparation, monthly and annual financial reporting, invoice payment, capital asset funding needs, project financial analysis, payroll, and various tax preparation and reporting functions.

As Clerk, the office maintains all City meeting minutes, personnel files, employee benefit programs, contracts and vehicle registrations and titles.

It’s important to note that in Indiana, the Clerk-Treasurer is on an equal level with the Mayor and the City Council.

This segregation of power is designed to ensure that checks and balances are in place to provide residents with a fair and equitable government.
