(Metamora, IN) – The Whitewater Canal State Historic Site, Indiana Department of Natural Resources and property owners have shaken hands on an agreement to have water flow again in Metamora’s dry canal (pictured).
The issue stems from a land dispute that temporarily held up dredging maintenance at the Laurel Feeder Dam.
Also contributing to the canal’s dry condition was a lack of significant rain for several weeks.
The agreement calls for crews to have access to the feeder dam area starting next week to remove debris and silt that’s blocking water flow into the Whitewater Canal.
The ownership issue is still being hashed out in court, but town officials and business owners say the return of water should reassure visitors that Metamora is open and ready to welcome tourists this fall.
