Michael L. “Mike” Illing Sr., 85, of Dillsboro passed away Sunday, September 21, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood with his loving family by his side. Mike was born on Tuesday, December 12, 1939, in Cincinnati; son of Samuel and Marie (Kirkland) Illing. Mike served in the United States National Guard. He worked as a machinist at Seagrams for many years. He married Hila (Adams) Illing on November 2, 1991, and she survives him. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, as well as remodeling and building houses. He was known to be very involved with organizations for children, always wanting them to feel welcome to be involved in sports and activities. He was previously a baseball coach, football coach, and scout master.
Mike will be missed by his wife Hila Illing of Dillsboro; sons Michael (Shari) Illing Jr. of Cincinnati, Steven (Deanna)) Illing of Ross, Patrick Illing of Cincinnati, Brian Illing of Cincinnati, and Kevin (Tracey) Illing of Cleves; step-daughter Shirley (Eugene) Bischoff of Marion, IN; brother Arthur Illing of Cincinnati; sisters Sandra (Ronnie ) Moore of Walton, KY and Debra “Debbie” Illing-Hancock of Cincinnati; many grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Marie Illing; sister Marcella Klayer; and brother Richard “Cappy” Illing.
In accordance with Mike’s wishes there will be no services at this time. Memorials may be given in honor of Mike to Dillsboro Volunteer Fire Department.
