The Los Angeles Angels got past the Reds 2-1 in Anaheim in a game heard last night on WRBI. The Angels scored what turned out to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning to break a 1-1 tie. Nick Martinez allowed one run on two hits while striking out seven and walking one over six innings but did not figure into the decision. Graham Ashcraft took the loss in relief. Offensively, the Reds could only muster five hits on the night. Ke’Bryan Hayes went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. The loss snapped the Reds 10-game winning streak over the Angels dating back to 2019. The Reds are off today before starting a three-game series tomorrow night at Arizona against the Diamondbacks.

Before last night’s series finale with the Angels, the Reds placed catcher Tyler Stephenson on the 10-day injured list with a left thumb fracture, retroactive to Sunday. The club selected catcher Will Banfield from Triple-A Louisville to take Stephenson’s place on the roster. Banfield signed with the Reds in the offseason and has yet to make his major league debut.

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor announced on Wednesday that offensive lineman Cordell Volson is expected to miss the 2025 season due to a shoulder injury. Volson will undergo shoulder surgery after he was injured in practice last week, and sat out Monday night’s preseason game against Washington. The Bengals took Volson in the fourth round (136th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. He’s made 48 regular season starts and appeared in 50 games since he was picked by the Bengals.

The Indianapolis Colts will close out the preseason against the Bengals on Saturday. With most of the roster spots set by now for the upcoming regular season, it will be a last opportunity for some players to secure a job. The Colts have signed a new defensive back in Xavien Howard, who is an eight-year NFL veteran. He is adding some depth to a depleted core of defensive backs due to injuries this preseason. The Colts will open the regular season September 7 against the Miami Dolphins, Howard’s former team.

The Purdue football team has added a lot of new faces to the defense this season. CJ Nunnally is a transfer from Akron. He led the MAC in both sacks and tackles-for-loss last year. Nunnally is joined by former Michigan pass rusher Breeon Ishmail on the defensive line. Ishmail played in eight games for the Wolverines last year. Purdue is looking to improve upon their 1-and-11 season from a year ago. They open against Ball State Week August 30.

The Indiana Fever will face the Minnesota Lynx on Friday inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse. It will be without three key players in Sydney Colson, Aari McDonald, and Sophie Cunningham. All three are out for the season with injuries. According to ESPN, Fever guard Caitlin Clark suffered a mild bone bruise after tweaking her left ankle during a workout earlier this month. Clark is still recovering from a right groin injury that has sidelined her for the past several weeks.
