The Pirates blanked the Reds 7-0 in Pittsburgh in a game heard last night on WRBI. Leading Cy Young candidate Paul Skenes tossed six scoreless innings while striking out eight and not walking a batter. The Reds had nine hits but were 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners. None of the Cincinnati hitters reached third base against Skenes or any of the three relievers who followed him to the mound. Brady Singer gave up four runs, six hits, and walked four in 3 2/3 innings and took the loss. Game two of the series is tonight. Rookie Chase Burns goes for Cincinnati against Mitch Keller. In NFL preseason action last night, it was the Eagles over the Cincinnati Bengals 34-27 in Philadelphia. Joe Burrow was 9 of 10 passing for 123 yards and two touchdowns in limited playing time early in the game. Desmond Ritter added a TD pass in the 4th quarter. The Ravens corralled the Indianapolis Colts 24-16 in Baltimore. Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson left the game with a dislocated pinkie finger on his throwing hand when he was sacked midway through the 1st quarter. He is listed as day-to-day. Daniel Jones, who is competing with Richardson for the starting QB job, threw for 144 yards with no touchdowns. The Colts will back in action next Saturday afternoon at home against Green Bay.
The Phoenix Mercury rolled over the Indiana Fever 95-60 in WNBA action out west last night. Sophie Cunningam led Indiana with 18 points. The Fever have dropped two straight and return home tomorrow night to face the Chicago Sky.
The Purdue Boilermakers are taking shape nicely in the eyes of new head coach Barry Odom. He spoke to the media for the first time in a while on Thursday and said that ‘the process is starting to take over’ for his squad. He added that competition amongst themselves for playing time is helping them become a better football team all around. The Boilers will open the season in less than three weeks against the Ball State Cardinals.
