Versailles Man Killed in Crash

(Versailles, IN) – A Versailles man is dead following a crash on U.S. 421 Friday morning.

Indiana State Police say the initial investigation indicated that shortly before 9 a.m., a scooter being ridden by 71-year-old Paul Schwarte was traveling eastbound on Clearview Lane approaching U.S. 421.

Troopers say the vehicle entered 421 and into the path of a northbound dump truck driven by 40-year-old Thomas Sheets of Versailles.

Troopers say Schwarte hit the driver’s side of Sheet’s vehicle, which caused Schwarte to be ejected from the scooter.

Schwarte was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheets was not injured.

Toxicology results are pending, but troopers say alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Troopers received assistance at the scene from the ISP Crash Reconstruction Team, Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, Versailles Police Department, Ripley County EMS, Versailles Fire Department, and the Ripley County Coroner’s Office.
