Several area high school volleyball programs earned the 2024-25 Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches’ Association Team Academic award. Varsity teams with an average Weighted GPA of 3.5 and higher for the entire school year are eligible for this honor. Batesville, Greensburg, South Ripley and Lawrenceburg earned the award. OA and BHS also earned the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association A+ rating for 2025.

The Atlanta Braves topped the Reds 4-2 in yesterday afternoon’s resumption of the MLB Speedway Classic in Bristol, Tennessee as heard on WRBI. The game was suspended Saturday night when heavy rain fell for much of the night at the legendary NASCAR track. Eli White hit two home runs to power the Braves to the win. Cincinnati couldn’t come up with a clutch hit – going one for eight with runners in scoring position and leaving 12 runners on base. Rookie Hurston Waldrep got the win; Brent Suter took the loss, and former Reds closer Raisel Iglesias notched the save. The Reds open a two-city, seven-game road trip with the first of three tonight against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Broadcast time is 7:35 p.m. on 103.9 FM.

The Indiana Fever held off the Seattle Storm 78-74 in WNBA action yesterday afternoon in the Emerald City. Natasha Howard led the Fever with 21 points while Sophie Cunningham added 17. Aliyah Boston had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and set a new franchise record for consecutive double-doubles with six. Indiana is now 17-12 and takes a five-game winning streak into tomorrow night’s game in Los Angeles against the Sparks.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen says he knows who will be starting at quarterback for their first preseason game against the Ravens. However, he says he is waiting to go public with the decision. Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones are vying for the starting job. Practice at training camp was hampered by a season-ending injury to Salvon Ahmed [SUH-vaughn] on Sunday. He was tackled by Trey Washington on a live play in which Washington used an illegal hip-drop tackle to bring Ahmed down.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will choose between either CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey to be their starting quarterback for the upcoming college football season. Both Minchey and Carr are splitting first-team reps at Fall practices, which got underway last week. Carr says he feels he brings accuracy and team chemistry to the table, while Minchey says he, too, brings accuracy and mobility to the quarterback spot. The Irish begin their season against Miami on August 31st.

The Indianapolis Indians cruised to a 12-4 win over the Iowa Cubs in their series finale from Des Moines. Ronny Simon led the way at the dish after going three for six with a three-run homer and five runs batted in. Indianapolis has won five of its last six and will host the Omaha Storm Chasers for a six-game set that begins tomorrow night.
