(Franklin/Rush/Shelby/Fayette Counties, IN) – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces the start of chip seal operations on multiple state-maintained highways throughout the month of July in Rush, Shelby, Franklin, and Fayette counties.

Operations are scheduled as follows, with daily road closures planned between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday.Work will continue for approximately five days per location, weather permitting. Access will be maintained for local traffic only.

  • On/after Tuesday, July 8: U.S. 52 between Rushville and Morristown in Rush and Shelby counties
  • On/after Monday, July 14: S.R. 244 between I-74 and S.R. 3 in Shelby and Rush counties
  • On/after Wednesday, July 16: S.R. 244 between S.R. 3 and U.S. 52 in Rush and Franklin counties
  • On/after Monday, July 21: S.R. 44 between S.R. 3 and Gray Road near Connersville in Rush and Fayette counties
  • On/after Wednesday, July 23: S.R. 44 between I-74 and S.R. 3 in Shelby and Rush counties

During chip seal operations, existing pavement is coated with liquid asphalt, which seals cracks and provides waterproof protection. This extends the service life of the roadway and lowers maintenance costs. Once the roadway is coated with liquid asphalt, loose aggregate is applied, and excess material is swept from the roadway. After a curing period, crews will return to fog seal the new driving surface and apply pavement markings.

INDOT encourages drivers to slow down, use extra caution and travel distraction-free in and near work zones. All work is weather-dependent, and schedules are subject to change.
