
(Greensburg, IN) – The Decatur County United Fund (DCUF) is recognizing outgoing South Decatur High School student board member Makayla Somers, who served a two-year term from June 1, 2023 until May 31, 2025.
Somers was an active volunteer for DCUF’s Strawberry Festival and Day of Caring, and was engaged in board governance, policy reviews, fundraising, and volunteer opportunities.
At South Decatur, Somers was active in basketball, volleyball, cheer, student council, FCA, SADD, Key Club, Class President, 4-H Future Builders, Junior Leaders, and Mayor’s Youth Council.
She is also the 2025 Decatur County Lilly Endowment Scholarship winner.
“Makayla is an outstanding student and will do very well at Butler University. The United Fund has been fortunate to have Makayla serve on the board and appreciates her desire to give back to her community. We wish her well in this next chapter of life,” said DCUF Executive Director Joane Cunningham.
“The United Fund has provided me with an unimaginable opportunity to see more into Decatur County and the things going on behind the scenes, and I couldn’t be more grateful for my time on the board,” Somers said.
She is being replaced on the student board by her sister, Taylor Somers, who is currently a junior at South Decatur High School.
This marks the first time in United Fund history that one sibling has replaced another as a student director.
Taylor Somers is involved in basketball, volleyball, student council, FCA, SADD, Key Club, Class President, and National Honor Society at South Decatur, as well as 4-H, Junior Leaders, and youth choir.
She is also a Legal Assistant at Cline King and King PC, and will serve a two-year term that began on June 1 and runs throught May 31, 2027.
“Taylor will gain greater knowledge of board governance, policies, procedures, finance, and our community during her tenure on the Decatur County United Fund board,” said Cunningham.
