Vera Fern (Fields) Benning, 86, of Dillsboro, IN passed away Friday, May 16, 2025, at Ripley Crossing, with her family by her side. Vera was born on January 27, 1939, in Harrison, Ohio. She was the daughter of Henry and Bridget Edna (Welsh) Fields. In April of 1977, Vera married Richard (Scratch) Benning, bringing with her five children from a previous marriage. Together, they welcomed a daughter, blending their lives into a loving family of six children. She worked at Dearborn County Courthouse as a county commissioner and county councilwoman. She was also a real estate broker for the tri-state area and retired as an executive secretary at Dearborn County Sewer District. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran church in Farmers Retreat and Trinity Lutheran church in Dillsboro. Vera was a member of the Dillsboro American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Rebekahs, Southeastern Indiana Board of Realtors and Dearborn County Adult Center. She volunteered for many organizations in her community along with volunteering her time reading to children at the local schools and taught real estate classes at the vocational school. She enjoyed dancing, music, and going to her family events.
Vera will be missed by her children, Michael (Karen) Lawhorn of Guilford, Margaret “Beth” (Darrell) Weaver of Dillsboro, Pamela (David) Davies of Dillsboro, Amy (Carl) Fryman of Dillsboro, Kimberly Caldwell of Covington, KY, and Heather (Frank) Davies of Dillsboro; companion Glenn Robinson of Dry Ridge, KY; sister Dorothy Cook of Harrison, Ohio; and brother-in-law Dean (Sandy) Benning of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Vera immensely enjoyed spending time with her-Grandchildren; Nastasha, Ty (Ashley), Sarah Beth (Nathan), David-Michael (Casey), Tommy (Trisha), Dale (Corrie), Derek, Trey (Ria), Austin, Logan (Alex), Hailey, Leslie (Sam), Cassie (Jacob), Tristan (Bayleigh), Erin, Savannah, and Taran.
Great-grandchildren; Kadan, Paris, Elijah, Khloe, Aiden, Sebastian, Isabella-Ireland, Crūe, Jacqueline, Khameron, Charles, Nolen, Azley, Kyra, Aubree, Vander, Cole, Conner, Dustin, Peyton, Ruth, and Charlie.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband Richard (Scratch) Benning, parents, Henry and Bridget “Edna” Fields, and brothers Eugene “Gene” and William Fields.
Family and friends may gather in remembering Vera from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM, Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the Filter-DeVries-Moore Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Services will immediately follow at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Richard Kolaskey officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Farmers Retreat. Memorials may be given in honor of Vera to the Dearborn County Clearing House, St. John Lutheran Cemetery, or Trinity Lutheran Church.
