James Purcell Maurer
Beloved son, brother, uncle and friend was born on April 10, 1948 and died April 13, 2025. He was the third child of Peter Maurer and Janet (Purcell) Maurer. Jim was raised in Rising Sun, Indiana and graduated from Indiana State University where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
Jim developed an early business sense by working at the family drugstore and cutting lawns in the neighborhood. He became a salesman in the beer industry, with assignments in Iowa, Idaho, Wisconsin, Kansas, Colorado and finally California. Jim also had numerous other business endeavors.
Jim enjoyed life. Whether it was attending an Indianapolis 500 with his fraternity brothers, organizing an event in his condo community, or hosting a family Christmas on the beach in California, people gravitated to Jim. He had a large circle of friends that he kept in close touch with through phone calls and birthday cards. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers PJ Maurer S.J., and Tom Maurer, and sister Mary Ann Hudson. Jim is survived by his sisters Marti Byrne (Tom) in Romeoville, IL and Jan Green (Don) in Florence, KY as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held April 25, 2025 at 11 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aurora, Indiana with visitation beginning at 9 am. Jim will then be buried in the Rising Sun Cemetery next to his mom and dad. In lieu of flowers, please consider The Brandon C. Gromada Head & Neck Cancer Foundation (gromadacancerfndn.org) or a charity of their choice.
