Marlene Eva Wolter, age 88, of Greensburg, Indiana, passed away on April 3, 2025, at Morning Breeze Healthcare Center. She was born on July 10, 1936, in Midland, Michigan, to Howard and Hazel (Woodruff) Rogers.
Marlene graduated from Midland Senior High School in 1954. During this time, she became pen pals with Bernard W. “Ben” Wolter while he was stationed in Germany. Their correspondence led to their marriage on May 12, 1956. They shared 34 years of marriage until Ben’s passing on August 6, 1990.
A charter member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Greensburg, Marlene was also a dedicated member of the First Church of God. She had a passion for crocheting, reading, and gardening, as well as sewing and baking. Marlene was known for her love of sports, especially playing softball, croquet, and corn hole, where she was quite skilled. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family, especially babysitting her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and grand puppies.
Marlene is survived by her children: Mike (Kathy) Wolter, Denise (Don) Underhill, Carolyn (Glenn) Gersch, and Jane Wolter; grandchildren: Donald Jr. (Kristie) Underhill, Angela (Garrick) Gantz, Nate (Lindsay) White, Dustin (Annette) White, Kirsten (Jordan) Vaughn, Samuel (Jessica) Gersch, David Wolter, and Darlene (Abel) Hernandez; great-grandchildren: Spencer Vaughn, Jeriden Vaughn, Everett Vaughn, Aurora Gersch, Bentley Gersch, Zada Haas, Marissa White, Autumn White, Lily White, Khloe Hunter, Brayden Haley, Mason White, Rileigh Dickson, Kal’el Ben Dickson, and Alex Underhill; and one great-great-grandchild on the way. She is also survived by her siblings: Dennis Rogers, Linda (Wayne) Allen, Elaine (Jim) Patterson, and Ila (Fred) Williams; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Ben, her son Jerome “Jerry” Wolter, grandchildren Daryl Wolter, Nick White, and great-grandchildren Matthew Underhill, Quentin Underhill, William Underhill, and Jonathan Underhill. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Karen White, brother-in-law, John White, and sister-in-law, Connie Rogers.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Terry Canfield officiating. Burial will follow at St. Maurice Catholic Cemetery in Decatur County.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.
