Irvin J. Kunkel

Irvin Joseph Kunkel, age 87 of Milan, Indiana and formerly of Batesville, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2025, at Ripley Crossing in Milan.  Born May 14, 1937, in Franklin County Indiana, he is the son of Edward and Lena (Nee: Ratz) Kunkel.  He married Esther Barnhorst on April 18, 1964, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Oldenburg, Indiana and she preceded him in death on December 3, 2020.

Irvin was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1958 – 1962 and was a member of the Greensburg American Legion Post #129. Irvin was a Tool and Die Maker at BCA (formerly Federal Mogul) in Greensburg, Indiana for 38 years, before retiring in 2001.

Irvin enjoyed trips to the Rising Star Riverboat Casino in Rising Sun, Indiana where he liked to take a chance with his luck playing the slot machines.  He loved making varieties of homemade wine and playing a good game of Euchre.

He is survived by his daughters Michelle (Paul) Bushelman of Moores Hill, Indiana and Tammy (Doug) Housel of Columbus, Indiana; sons Douglas (Suzanne) Kunkel of Batesville and Steven (Vanessa) Kunkel of Bright, Indiana; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister Rita Williams and brother James Kunkel.

Visitation is Friday, February 28th, from 10:00 – 11:45 a.m. at Weigel Funeral Home in Batesville.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Oldenburg, with Fr. Stan Pondo officiating.  The burial will be at St. Louis Cemetery, with military graveside rites being conducted by the Ripley County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 of Batesville.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Greensburg American Legion Post #129.
