Julian “Jerry” Robert Schene, age 86, passed away on January 23, 2025, in Shelbyville, Indiana. He was born to Robert and Helen (Cook) Schene on July 10, 1938. Jerry married Jeanne (Kohlman) Schene on October 24, 1959, at St. Maurice’s Catholic Church in Napoleon, and they celebrated 61 years of marriage. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.
Jerry was an accomplished outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed traveling, visiting many amazing places in the U.S. and Europe. His favorite destination was Alaska, where he lived for some time and worked in a family-owned gold mining operation with his uncles, Earl and Adrian Schene. Jerry was known for his outgoing personality and tremendous sense of humor. He worked for many years at Washington Elementary School in Greensburg, where “Mr. Schene” is remembered for his fun-loving nature and rapport with students.
Jerry recently resided at McKay Manor in Shelbyville, where he made many new friends and enjoyed joking around with fellow residents and staff.
Jerry is survived by his sons, Eric Schene of Cincinnati, OH, and Craig (Mary) Schene of Shelbyville, IN; and his grandchildren, Reid, Grant, and Cole Schene; his brother, Jim Schene of Alaska; In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne; his brother, Dennis Schene; and his sisters, Jean Snow, Judy Martin, and Audrey Hornberger.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 29, from 10:00 to 11:40 a.m. at Weigel Funeral Home in Batesville. A Mass will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, Oldenburg, Indiana, with Fr. John Barker, OFM, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Maurice Cemetery in Napoleon, IN.
