John Thomas “Ace” Moorman aged 89 of Oldenburg, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born August 26, 1935, in Batesville, he is the son of Herman and Loretta (nee: Mollaun) Moorman. Ace married Claire Edwina (nee: Oesterling) Moorman on October 24, 1959, at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1461, Batesville Lion’s Club, and the Eagles Aerie #1130.
Ace was a 1953 graduate of Batesville High School. There he was active in every way possible. Ace was senior class president and earned 14 letters while playing football, basketball, baseball, and track. After high school he went on to play basketball and study engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He made life-long friends at BHS and UC.
After college, Ace was co-owner of the Batesville Roller Mills before working at the Farmer’s Feed in Batesville as well as Kellerman’s Feed and Wallpe Feeds in St. Maurice. Ace absolutely loved spending time with the farmers of the area. He worked full-time until the age of 85.
In his spare time, Ace volunteered for numerous worthy causes. One of his most cherished was coaching the American Legion baseball team for more than 25 years. Ace earned many civic and athletic awards in his lifetime. He was named to the Indiana High School basketball silver anniversary team as well as the Ripley County Basketball Hall of Fame. Ace was also chosen to represent Ripley County as an Indiana Bicentennial Torchbearer for his many contributions to the area.
Ace loved watching all types of sporting events. He was a fixture at basketball, baseball, football, and tennis events throughout the area. But it wasn’t the sporting events he cherished most; it was the people. Ace considered southeastern Indiana “God’s country”. He knew almost everyone, and everyone knew him.
Throughout his life Ace remained supremely humble. He truly cared for other people regardless of their station in life. Above all else, Ace loved spending time with his family. The shining star of his life was his wife, Claire. Ace remained a widower for his final 41 years on earth waiting to be reunited with his beloved.
Ace is survived by his sons Gary (Mary) Moorman of Batesville, Dale (Tara) Moorman of Oldenburg, and Mark Moorman of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren Claire (Mike) Smith of Delphi, IN, James (Trisha) Moorman and Matt Moorman all of Indianapolis, IN, Pros Moorman of Oldenburg, IN, and Frank Moorman of Oldenburg, IN; and two great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
