Shelby Ann Neville, 83, passed peacefully at her home in Greensburg on November 16, 2024. Shelby was a lifelong resident of Greensburg, where she was born on November 13, 1941 to Walter A. Jones and Elsie Ann (Land) Jones. She attended Greensburg Community High School. On October 31, 1959, she married Hugh Neville.
Shelby was a lifelong caretaker and homemaker. She devoted her time and talent to keeping her family, friends, loved ones—and sometimes casual acquaintances—fed, rested, healthy, and in line. Not much escaped Shelby’s watchful eye, and she’d make it her mission to right whatever was troubling someone in need. She was quick with her wit, sarcasm, or empathy in any given situation. She was her family’s fiercest, most caring, and most loyal protector, with her actions rooted deeply in love.
Many in the community were beneficiaries of her famous Sugar Cream pie, German Chocolate, Swedish, or Robert Redford cake, always hand delivered in a traveling covered pan emblazoned with “from Shelby’s kitchen” on the cover. And Shelby’s kitchen was a very special place to many. Any day of the week, or hour of the day, Shelby could be hosting someone for a spontaneous visit over a cup of hot tea, and leftovers from the most recent meal she’d prepared (probably too much of). For this reason, many strangers became friends, and friends became family—keeping in touch for decades and traveling for hours to come for periodic visits. There was nothing Shelby adored more than to hold court in her very full house.
Shelby is survived by her loving husband of sixty-five years, Hugh Neville; three daughters, Randisu Peyton of Franklin, and twins Lisa Carmony and Lora (Larry) Hadler of Greensburg; five grandchildren, Bobbi (Bryce) Kinder of Franklin, Ashley (Kent) Winingham of Carmel, Courtney (Ryan) Rudd of Westport, Larami (Philip) Schneider of Batesville, and Derek Carmony of Greensburg; and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings.
Friends may call at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 20. Visitation will begin at noon, and the service will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Forrest Hamilton officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the family. Shelby will be laid to rest at Sandcreek Cemetery. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.gilliland-howe.com.
