Mr. Howard L. Young, age 81 of Commiskey, Indiana and formerly of Moores Hill, entered this life on June 18, 1943 near Hazard in Perry County, Kentucky. The loving son of the late Carlos “Jack” and Victoria Milam Young, Howard grew up in nearby Krypton, along with his sister Jackie and brother James. A second brother, Frank Darrell, died in infancy. Eventually the family relocated to Aurora, Indiana where Howard later worked as a farmhand for several years in the Moores Hill area, mostly agricultural enterprises on Chesterville Road. While employed there, in 1964, he met his first wife, JoAnn Billingsley. This happy union of 29 years was blessed with one daughter, Kristina. JoAnn passed away on December 11, 1993 at the age of 49 from cancer. He was inducted into the United States Army on February 17, 1964 in Indianapolis, Indiana and rose to the rate of Specialist Four. He served in Company B, 6th Battalion, 2nd Brigade during the Vietnam Era. Receiving the National Defense Service Medal, he was honorably discharged on February 17, 1967 from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After his military service, Howard returned home to Dearborn County and drove a log truck for the next two years. In 1969, Howard commenced a life career with Thatcher Glass/Anchor Glass Company in Lawrenceburg. He retired from Anchor Glass in 1997 after 30-plus years of dedicated service. In the summer of 1994, Howard met Roberta Lee Koons and they were united in marriage on January 14, 1995 in Florence, Indiana. This union blended two families and they shared many happy, loving memories together, surrounded by their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Howard and Roberta retired to their home in Commiskey in 1997. For pleasure, Howard, a jack-of-all trades, enjoyed camping, traveling in his RV out West, following dirt track and sprint car racing, caring for his animals, joking around with his family and going on Sunday rides. Baptized in 1964 at the First Baptist Church in Moores Hill, Howard was a member of the Kent Christian Church in Kent, Indiana. He also belonged to the Madison VFW Post 1969 in Madison. Howard died on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at 2:10 a.m. at the Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison, Indiana after a long battle with Alzheimers.
