Nelson Roberts, 78, of Greensburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024, at Decatur County Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 26, 1946, in Greensburg, the son of Ambrose and Cynthia (Furnish) Roberts.
On December 5, 1969, Nelson married the love of his life, Darlene Dyer, and together they shared a beautiful life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Nelson had a deep love for his community and his family, and his passions were as big as his heart. He had a special place in his soul for John Deere tractors and could often be found tending to his yard — a task he took on with pride, often mowing not only his own lawn but that of his neighbors as well. After a hard day’s work, he could always be found enjoying a cold beverage, reflecting on the simple joys of life.
Nelson’s love for family was evident in his relationship with his great-granddaughter, Laelynn Howard, whom he held very close to his heart. The love for his children and grandchildren was unwavering, and his legacy lives on in them.
Nelson was highly involved in his community, dedicating much of his time to organizations that were close to his heart. He was an active participant in Power of the Past and served as the head of the Conservation Club for several years. He retired after 25 years of service with the Greensburg Street Department, and following his retirement, he continued to work part-time for Stones, enjoying the work and the relationships he built there.
Nelson is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Darlene Roberts; his children: Kevin (Carrie) Roberts, Bobby (Debbie) Roberts, and Tammy Roberts; his grandchildren: Troy (Zoey) Howard, Dakota Roberts, Colten Roberts, Cory Watson, Ben Watson, Chase (Becca) Roberts, and Keegan Roberts; his step-grandsons: Tyler Baldwin, Tanner Baldwin, Miles Baldwin, and Tripper Baldwin; and three great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. He is also survived by his brothers, Danny Roberts and Dale Roberts, as well as several nieces and nephews, all of whom will remember him fondly.
Nelson was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved daughter, Michelle Roberts Howard; and siblings Paul Roberts, Patsy Woolard, Francis Lewis, and Alice Bokelman.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, November 9, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM, also at the funeral home, with Pastor Ray Sweet officiating. Nelson’s wishes were to be cremated after the services.
Memorial contributions can be sent to the Heart Association or the National Kidney Foundation.
