(Statewide) – Indiana’s electric cooperatives are hosting the annual “Indiana’s Electric Cooperative Community Day” on Friday, October 11.
Twenty-eight of Indiana’s electric cooperatives are completing a project that addresses specific needs within their local communities.
Locally, Decatur County REMC is assisting at Speranza House recovery home; and Southeastern Indiana REMC is celebrating “Co-op Days” during the month of October with a food drive, appreciation notes from the CEO, and member-focused events such as Community Day at Versailles State Park, Safety Night, and a Mobile Mammography Program at the co-op’s headquarters in Osgood.
Indiana Electric Cooperatives says this day of service embodies one of the core cooperative principles: concern for community. With nearly 40 unique projects planned, the initiative allows cooperatives to use their time, skills, and resources to make a meaningful impact throughout the state.
“A cooperative’s fundamental purpose is to serve its community,” said John Cassady, CEO of Indiana Electric Cooperatives. “Indiana’s Electric Cooperative Community Day is an opportunity for us to work collectively toward a shared goal—making a difference across the state. Supporting the communities we serve is at the heart of everything we do.”
Indiana’s electric cooperatives are involved in a range of philanthropic efforts year-round, both locally and globally.
Through “Project Indiana,” Indiana’s electric cooperatives have been electrifying villages in the poorest areas of Guatemala where there was no electricity available.
Last year, a crew that included Decatur County REMC line worker Collin Crabtree, extended electric infrastructure in the village of Pena Roja along the western edge of Guatemala. Because of the line workers’ efforts, 26 homes in the village now have electricity for the first time.
Plans for a 2025 project are currently underway.
Indiana’s electric cooperatives also annually support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana with a fundraiser affiliated with its annual meeting.
