Columbus North shut out host Batesville 2-Nil in a girls’ soccer match heard last night on WRBI. It’s the final tune up before sectional play begins next week.

South Decatur varsity volleyball outlasted Oldenburg Academy in five sets in a rematch of last year’s sectional last night. OA won the first and third sets while the Cougars took the second, fourth and fifth sets. The scores were 25-21, 25-20, 25-19, 25-18, 15-11. Makayla Somers led South Decatur with 39 assists, two aces, five kills, eight digs and two blocks, and Raegan Benge came off the bench in the fifth set because of an injury and came up with crucial serves.

The Greensburg volleyball team earned its 20th win of the season with a non-conference home win against Southwestern Monday night. The Pirates won the match 25-18, 25-11, 25-9.

In the MLB wild card openers on Tuesday, San Diego blanked Atlanta 4-0. Batesville native Bryan Hoeing is on the Padres postseason roster but the righthander did not pitch last night. Elsewhere, the New York Mets doubled up Milwaukee 8-4…Kansas City shut out Baltimore 1-0…and Detroit topped Houston 3-1. Game two of each best-of-three series comes up this afternoon and evening. The Padres, Mets, Royals and Tigers can advance to the Divisional round with wins today and tonight.
