Bill Swinney, 77, Rexville

 William “Bill” D. Swinney, 77, of Rexville passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at Ripley Crossing Health Care in Milan after a 2 day stay. He was born in Milan on November 10, 1946, the son of Clifford R. and Ruby F. (May) Swinney. He was married to Anna Kay Carter on November 12, 1965, to this union two children were born. Nancy Kay Swinney, of New Marion and Gary William (Annie) Swinney of Greensburg, 5 grandchildren, Kendall Rose Swinney of Mooresville, Kylie, Tristen, Emma and Alaina Hostetler of Greensburg. Bill is also survived by his brothers Gerald (Ed) and Linda of La Plata, MO. Larry (Jake) and Pam of Pulaski, TN; his sister Rita Dobbs of Pulaski, TN, aunt Lora Swinney and many cousins. Bill graduated from New Marion High School in 1965 and he entered the U.S. Army on May 3, 1966 and was honorably discharged on May 2, 1968, achieving the rank od SP4(T) E4 serving one year in Vietnam. For service to his country Bill was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Bill became a licensed auctioneer in 1969 and worked with many auctioneers all over the state. He was a mechanic by trade at the Jefferson Proving Ground and the Lakeshore National Park before retiring. Bill drove a bus for South Ripley School Corporation. Bill was a 41 Year member of the Holton Masonic Lodge 624 and a 32nd Scottish Rite, and a member of the Versailles American Legion Leora Weare Post 173. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 24 at 11 a.m. at the New Marion Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Elston officiating. Burial will be in the New Marion Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church. The Holton Masonic Lodge will conduct services Friday at 7:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the New Marion Cemetery or the Holton Masonic Lodge in care of the funeral home.
