Itkin Makes His Mark on France

PARIS–  We told you Monday about Notre Dame grad, 2-time women’s foil fencing gold medalist Lee Kiefer.

Well, on the men’s side, another former Notre Dame student has made Olympic things happen with his foil in hand.  That’s Nick Itkin.  The son of Ukrainian immigrants has supplied the United States with another Olympic fencing medal.  The 2nd-seeded Itkin beat Japan’s Kazuki Iimura 15-12 for the bronze in foil Monday night at the Grand Palais.  It’s his 2nd Olympic medal, after a team bronze at Tokyo in 2021.

Itkin was an NCAA champion for the Fighting Irish in 2018 and ’19, and helped them win the team championship in ’22.  He is the United States’ 6th Olympic medalist in men’s foil in 120 years.  With Kiefer and Lauren Scruggs winning gold and silver in foil Sunday, this is the first time U.S. men and women have ever earned individual medals in fencing at the same Olympics.
