In Pittsburgh Wednesday afternoon, the Reds’ Hunter Greene pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings and 9 strikeouts at the Pirates, but that was all for naught. Neither team could get much offense going in the extreme heat, but Pittsburgh’s Bryan Reynolds hit a go-ahead homer in the bottom of the 8th inning. It ended up being just enough to edge out Cincinnati, the final Pirates 1, Reds 0. That shot was Reynolds’ 10th dinger of the season, extending his hitting streak to 17 games, the longest by a Pirate since 2019. Neither club had a ton of offense. Strong pitching from both Greene and Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller only let the teams combine for 5 hits through the whole game. The Reds failed to even get a runner to 3rd base against Keller, and could only muster a pair of base hits, one by Jonathan India and one from Santiago Espinal, over 7 innings. Following the loss, the Reds will be back in Cincinnati tomorrow, hosting the Red Sox for the first of 3 games. The Friday night broadcast will begin at 6:40, on the Sports Voice, 103.9 WRBI.
WNBA play last night saw the Indiana Fever win their 4th home game in a row, for the first time since 2015. They’re now 5 & 2 for the month of June, 6 & 10 on their season, after beating the Washington Mystics, 88-81, in front of another sellout crowd of more than 17,000 at the Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Caitlin Clark scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the game. The Fever visits the Atlanta Dream tomorrow.
The US Olympic swim trials continue at Lucas Oil Stadium, where last night the woman many call the greatest female swimmer in history, Katie Ledecky, won her 3rd consecutive event. It was the longest one, the 1500-meter freestyle, which Ledecky completed in just over 15:37. Katie Grimes finished in 2nd place, about 20 seconds back. The 27-year-old Ledecky’s expected to be the strong gold medal favorite in Paris. She’s undefeated in the 1500 so far in her professional career, and currently holds the world record.
