Polly Back Holbrook, 94, of Versailles passed away at 10:55 a.m., Monday, June 17, 2024 at St. Andrews Health Campus in Batesville. She was born at Keck in Breathitt County, Kentucky on September 8, 1929, the daughter of Esther and Pearl Vancleave Gevedon. She married Arnold Back on September 3, 1949 and he preceded her in death on September 12, 1987. She was then married to Luther Holbrook who preceded her in death on August 17, 2019. Survivors include two sons Reed Back and Rob (Bridget) Back both of Versailles; three daughters Ilene Ryker of Cross Plains, Dee (Keith) Ertel of Napoleon, and Teresa Hosmer of Versailles; son-in-law Bob Fox of Versailles; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren; sisters Bonnie Miller of Versailles and Treva (Walter) Rolf of Indianapolis. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Debbie Fox, great granddaughter Alexa Lynn Ertel, her son-in-laws Larry Hosmer and Cy Ryker, daughter-in-law Barbara May Back, brothers Ralph Gardner, David, and Esther Gevedon, and her sisters Evalee Back, Lucille Redwine, and Martha, Daisy, and Pearlie Gevedon. Mrs. Back was a 1949 graduate of Cross Plains High School. Through the years Polly worked for the Versailles and Osgood IGA stores, as well as Alco, C & C Discount, and Cuzzin Jacks, all in Versailles, as well as being a full-time wife and mother. She enjoyed quilting and doing puzzles. Polly was a member of the Tanglewood Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Friendship with Rev. Sherman Hughes officiating. Burial will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Monday at the church. Memorials may be given to CEF (cefseindiana.com) or the Tanglewood Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
