Mr. Ronald Thomas “Ron” Lewis

If you ever heard the song “I’ve Been Everywhere” by Johnny Cash and you knew a man from Southeastern Indiana named Ron Lewis you might swear the man in black wrote that song about Ron because it truly did seem that he had indeed been everywhere. Mr. Ronald Thomas Lewis, Ron or Ronnie to those close to him, was born in Jeffersonville, Indiana on April 22, 1943 to Thomas W. and Corine G. (Powell) Lewis. Just like most Indiana boys do, Ron grew up loving farming, motorcycles, hot rods, hunting and fishing. As time went on and he grew into a young man, Ron decided to serve his country and enlisted into the United States Army on February 16, 1968 in Madison, Indiana. He did his basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia and was stationed in Fort Ord, California before being sent to Germany for over a year. He received the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged from the reserves with the rank of Specialist 4th Class on November 14, 1970. Ron was bitten by the love bug when a pretty young Switzerland County girl named Betty Jo Pickett caught his eye and they were married on November 24, 1971 in Patriot, Indiana. Their happy home was complete once they welcomed home their son, Bill. Ron found his true calling when trucking entered his life. Here and there. Near and far. North and South. East and West. When the road called, he went. Upon returning home from the road, you would often find Ron at his favorite restaurant, Jack’s Place in Rising Sun, Indiana, sitting and telling stories of his travels and enjoying more than a couple cups of coffee. The miles he traveled too many to count, but he knew the highways and byways around the United States so well that even after being retired from trucking for over 20 years he could still tell you the best roads to travel to reach your destination better than any GPS. Ron will be missed, but we are happy for his reunion with Betty and our Lord and Savior. Ron passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at his residence in Vevay, Indiana.

Ron is survived by his son, Bill Lewis and his wife, Carole of Vevay, IN and his grandson, Nathan Lewis of Vevay, IN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas W. and Corine G. (Powell) Lewis; his wife, Betty Jo (Pickett) Lewis, died July 31, 2010 and his half brothers, Gary and Jerry Hinman.
