There’s been a lot of high school sectional competition going on in recent days. In the track meet at East Central, many athletes sent themselves on to regionals. The Trojans won the meet with 137 points, Batesville close behind at 133, and Franklin County 3rd. Batesville advances athletes to regionals in 13 of 16 events, most of them automatic qualifiers.
North Decatur finished 7th among 13 schools in that meet. One of the Chargers’ top competitors, as throughout her career, Madi Allen, qualified at a personal record time just over 48 seconds in the 300-meter low hurdles. She also placed 5th in the high jump, and set another personal record, going 6th in the long jump. Also in the post-season, girls’ tennis sectional 19 is being played at East Central. Batesville knocked South Dearborn out 5-love Wednesday, so the Bulldogs took the Trojans on late Thursday, and in the other bracket, Lawrenceburg topped Milan 4-1 to advance and face Oldenburg. The winners of those matches square off Saturday. At Columbus North in sectional 20, Greensburg has played Hauser, and in sectional 22, homestanding Connersville knocked out Franklin County 4-1.
Congrats are in order for former Jac-Cen-Del girls’ basketball star Julia Meyer. She’s announced she’s going to be playing her college hoops at Terre Haute’s Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology..
The Reds had a big first night Thursday, of their 4 in LA taking on the Dodgers. Elly De La Cruz stole 4 bases in the game, helping Cincinnati build a 7-0 lead, and Los Angeles could do nothing to come back from that in the 9th inning. The final score, 7-2 Reds.
Pato O’Ward led the speedsters in practice Thursday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He was fastest at 228.861 miles an hour, driving the Number 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. Speeds are expected to go up from noon to 6 at the track today, on “Fast Friday.”
Game 2 of the Reds & Dodgers at 9:40 tonight, and the 108th Indy 500 on Sunday the 26th, can both be heard on the Sports Voice, 103.9 FM, WRBI.
And hoping to play fast in the NBA post-season tonight will be the Pacers, hosting the Knicks at 8:30 for Game 6 of their Eastern Conference semi-final series. New York leads the best of 7, 3 games to 2.
