It’s Primary Election Day

(Southeastern IN/Statewide) – It is Primary Election Day in Indiana.

There are a number of contested local races on the Republican ballot.

In Ripley County, two candidates a piece are running for County Commissioner in districts 2 and 3; Eight Republicans are vying for three spots for County Council At-Large on the Nov. ballot; and there contested races for Coroner and Sunman Town Council Member 1.

Decatur County voters who choose a Republican ballot in today’s primary election will have several choices when it comes to contested races. Three Republicans are running for County Commissioner in District 1, while four others are vying for the nomination in District 3. There are also six GOP County Council At-Large candidates hoping to land one of three spots on the November ballot.

Longtime Franklin County Circuit Judge Steven Cox is being challenged by Alex Dudley; three candidates are running for Surveyor; there are seven Republicans vying for three County Council at-large spots on this fall’s ballot; and two candidates a piece are running for Brookville Town Council in wards 1, 3, and 5.

In Dearborn County, there are two candidates each in the Clerk’s race and for County Commissioner District 1; three are running for the County Commissioner District 2 nomination, and four are vying for three At-Large County Council bids. There are also three GOP candidates running for the Dillsboro Town Council District 3 nomination.

Ripley and Franklin join Decatur and Dearborn counties this year in using the vote center system, in which registered voters can cast a ballot at any polling place in their county.

There are six Republicans running for the party’s nomination for Governor to succeed the term-limited Eric Holcomb. The winner will face Democrat and former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick in the fall.

Two local house districts feature Republican primaries. State Rep. Alex Zimmerman is being challenged in House District 67 by Chad Meinders, and incumbent Jennifer Meltzer is opposed in the GOP Primary by Edward Comstock II in House District 73.

Meanwhile, 9th District Congresswoman Erin Houchin will attempt to fend off a challenge from fellow Republican Hugh Doty. Houchin announced yesterday that she has picked up the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. On the Democratic ballot, it’s Tim Peck vs. D. Liam Dorris.

The polls are open until 6 p.m. You must have a government-issued photo ID to cast a ballot.
