(Franklin County, IN) – For the first time in more than 50 years, a different agency will provide emergency medical services to Franklin County residents and visitors.

It’s the first day of a four-year contract between the county and Letts Community Volunteer Fire and Rescue after commissioners awarded the EMS contract to the southern Decatur County-based unit in December.

Letts was the recommended choice of consultants and the EMS Review Committee.

Also submitting bids were Franklin County EMS – which provided service to the county starting in 1972 – and Heartland Ambulance Service.

Commissioners went along with the recommendation and chose Letts because it submitted the low bid, has paramedics on staff, and has the ability to provide additional ambulances when necessary.

County officials had concerns about Franklin County EMS over availability issues.

In the days leading up to the change, a number of public safety officials took to social media to thank Franklin County EMS personnel – past and present – for their service and dedication.
