(Statehouse) – A new state law, House Enrolled Act 1021, is creating a Green Alert for at-risk veterans.
The Green Alert will notify the public whenever a veteran or military member is reported missing or believed to be at-risk of being harmed or hurting themselves.
Having alert classifications helps first responders be better prepared to offer support.
The Green Alert is similar to the Amber Alert for missing children and the Silver Alert for missing seniors.
The measure received unanimous support in both the Indiana House and Senate.
Statistics show veterans are more likely to die by suicide after going missing, and Indiana’s veteran suicide rate is higher than the national average.
In 2021, nearly 140 Hoosiers veterans died by suicide and over 6,000 nationwide, according the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
A Green Alert will be issued for veterans, active service members, and Indiana National Guard members and reservists who are missing or at risk.
Veterans in crisis can call 9-8-8 and press 1 for confidential help, or text 838255.
