(Batesville, IN) – People lined up bright and early Thursday morning outside Schmidt Bakery in Batesville to buy Cherry Thing-A-Lings.
The fritter-type donut filled with cherries and topped with a cherry glaze are available for in-store purchase between 4 a.m. and 6 p.m. every day, including Sunday. through Presidents Day on Monday.
Clem and Bertie Schmidt started what has become a tasty Presidents Day weekend tradition in the early ‘70s, in a nod to the tale of George Washington chopping down a cherry tree.
The bakery sold a record 232,800 – or 19,365 dozen – Cherry Thing-A-Lings last year.
