Robert L. Smith, 79, of the Hopewell Community near Holton passed away at 7 a.m., Sunday, February 4, 2024 at the Columbus Regional Hospital. He was born on the farm where he spent his entire life on March 26, 1944, the son of Raymond and Leona Meyer Smith. He was married to Clara Campbell Hauser on May 24, 1986 and she preceded him in death on April 8, 2021. Survivors include one step-son James (Barbara) Campbell of Indianapolis; three step-daughters Roxanna Collins and her fiancé Jack Granger of Lawrenceburg, Virginia (Rick) Koors of Greensburg, and Bonnie (Tim) Bolt of Holton; daughter-in-law Connie Hauser of Versailles; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter; one sister Zella Wyatt of Greensburg. He was also preceded in death by his parents, step-sons David Hildebrand and Bobby Hauser, son-in-law Brian Scott Collins,his brother Lawrence “Bud” Smith, and his sister Evelyn Comer. Mr. Smith was a 1963 graduate of Holton High School. His working career spanned many years, working for Arvin Industries in Madison and for nearly 40 years with Bonn Aluminum in Greensburg, while also operating his farm. Bob was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church and had served with the Indiana National Guard. He loved his extended family along with all the grandchildren, all who loved him likewise. Bob’s heart was always at home and with his farm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 10 at 11 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Luke Koors officiating. Burial will be in the Hopewell Cemetery. Visitation will also be on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Memorials may be given to the Hopewell Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.
