(Lawrenceburg, IN) – Sergio Marroquin Crisostomo was sentenced in Dearborn County this week to 38 years in prison after pleading guilty to Attempted Rape With a Deadly Weapon (Level 1 felony).
The 28-year-old Crisostomo was accused of trying to rape a Lawrenceburg woman who was mowing grass outside her garage last June.
The woman told investigators she saw a man later identified as Crisostomo approached and pulled her into the garage, as she screamed and pleaded for him to stop.
Crisostomo allegedly threatened her with a knife and cut her pants, and then investigators say he pulled down his pants in an attempt to rape the woman.
After a struggle, the victim was able to escape and went to a neighbor’s house for help.
Shortly after jurors were selected for his trial in November, Crisostomo pled guilty to the charge in open court.
The sentence range for Attempted Rape With a Deadly Weapon is anywhere from 20 to 40 years.
After hearing evidence, Dearborn Circuit Judge Aaron Negangard ordered Crisostomo to serve 38 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections.
“The bravery exhibited by the victim in this case was astounding. Her presence of mind she possessed in defending herself against Crisostomo, along with giving law enforcement a description of her assailant was remarkable,” said Dearborn/Ohio County Prosecutor Lynn Deddens. “She is a survivor and I hope that this sentence allows her the process to heal.”
