Lestol Harmon, of Sunman, was born on December 16, 1935, a son to Lindsey and Alberta Hussong Harmon. After graduating from Sunman High School, he served his country in the United States Army. Lestol married Shirley Vogel at St. John Lutheran Church – Hubbell’s Corner on August 5, 1955, and together they raised two children. He was a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and retired after 40 years of service. Lestol was President of the Indiana Rural Letter Carrier’s Association and served his community as a volunteer fireman for over 27 years. He also worked for Sunman Dearborn schools as a school bus driver. Lestol was a man of God and was a long-time deacon in the church and founding member of Sunman Bible Church. He was a selfless man, always serving others. He lived for his family, his happiest moments were when he was surrounded by his kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Lestol also enjoyed sports, following the Reds, and Bengals, and spent years traveling around the country watching the college basketball team his grandson coached. On Sunday, September 24, 2023, at the age of 87, he passed away at home surrounded by family.
Those surviving who will cherish Lestol’s memory include his loving wife of over 68 years, Shirley Harmon; one son, Mike (Lisa) Harmon of Westfield, a daughter, Sandra Harmon of Sunman; 5 grandchildren, Chad Harmon, Brittany Haller, Cara Joiner, Krista Thorpe, and Alicia Meiner, and 15 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Flora Jean Harmon; three brothers, Bill, Tom, and Don, and one great-grandson, Brooks Harmon.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, September 30, 2023, from 12 noon until 2 p.m. at Cook Rosenberger Funeral Home, 107 Vine Street, Sunman. A Celebration of Life, officiated by Pastor Doug Combs, will be at 2 p.m. with military honors immediately following at the funeral home. The burial will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.
