Gerald “Gary” Wonning age 79 of Algonac, MI passed away September 6, 2023, in the Ascension St. John River District Hospital. He was born September 4, 1944, in Batesville, IN to the late James and Mabel (Huneke) Wonning. Gary served in the United States Air Force Reserve and later worked for the Cummins company in Columbus. Gary married Vergie Faye Walker in 1967. They would have three daughters, Annette, Tammie, and Wendy during their 17 years of marriage. He married Jeanne Alice Neumann on February 2, 1991, in Shelbyville, IN. Gary retired from the United Parcel Service (UPS) after 27 years of service and received a 25-Year Safe Driving Award. He was a life member of the Batesville, IN, Masonic Lodge #668 of F & AM, and a member of the Sahib Shriners of Sarasota, FL and in 2007 became Commander of the Sahib Shriners Mariners. He became a member of the Algonac Lions Club in 2022. Gary was a member of the US Air Force Reserves. Mr. Wonning is survived by his wife Jeanne, children Annette Wonning, Tammie (Jeffrey) Garstecki, Wendy (Brian) Blank, Krystle (Fred) Gaulter, and Ronald (Danielle) Sliwinski, a brother Paul (Lynne) Wonning, 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Funeral services at 11:00 AM Wednesday in the Young Gilbert Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., Algonac, MI. Visitation Tuesday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM 6:00 to 8:00 PM and 10:00 to 11:00 AM Wednesday in the funeral home. A Masonic service will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday in the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Baltimore, MI, followed by a luncheon from 2:30 to 5:00 PM at the Algonac Lions Club 1905 Mill St. Algonac, MI. 48001. Gary’s family will hold a “Celebration of Life Event,” at the Brau Haus in Oldenburg, Indiana on Saturday, September 16 from 2 – 4 PM. The Masonic Lodge of Batesville will hold a short public service at 3:00 PM.
