Nelson Ray Ponsler, 75 of North Vernon

Nelson Ray Ponsler, 75, of North Vernon, passed away at 9:41 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at his residence. He was born on March 14, 1948, in Jennings County, the son of Harlace M. and Ruth E. (Mozingo) Ponsler. He graduated from North Vernon High School in 1966 and had served in the Indiana National Guard. Nelson was a lifelong farmer and sold corn and soybeans for Glick Seed for many years. He was a member of the Zenas Baptist Church, where is served as a trustee. He enjoyed attending church services and the Men’s Coffee & Question Group. He served as director to the Westport Community Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with friends and family and attending his grandchildren’s school and sporting events. Nelson collected antique tractors and participated in the tractor parade every year at the Jennings County Fair. In his younger years he enjoyed pulling tractors at the fair. Most of all he loved his family and was proud of his children and grandchildren. He married Norma Jean Burgess on January 6, 1973, at the Westport Baptist Church. His wife Jean survives, along with his daughter, Holly Jean Huckelberry (Fiancé, Chris Gambrel) of Westport; his son, Bradley Ray (Emily) Ponsler of North Vernon; his brother, James L. (Charlene) Ponsler of North Vernon; his seven grandchildren, Lydia and Natalie Ponsler, Garrett and Anna Huckelberry, Creed, Ben and Judah Gambrel and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Nancy Ann Perkins. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home with Pastor Mitch Harrell officiating. The burial will follow at Rockcreek Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Sunday one hour prior to service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zenas Baptist Church, Westport Volunteer Fire Department or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana through the funeral home.
