John E. Friend, 80, of Dabney passed away at 12:20 a.m., Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. He was born near Osgood on August 11, 1943, the son of Albert and Dicia Goble Friend. He was married to Sharon “Ann” Forbes on December 18, 1963 and she preceded him in death on August 26, 2019. Survivors include nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers Albert, Clarence, Ralph, and Levi Friend and Frank Bailey, and sisters Neava McFarland, Mardell Tollen, Catherin Betz, Marie Ogourn, Louise Fox, Iona Menefee, Pauline Moore, Joann Friend, Alberta Anderson, Rachel Bartley, and two infant siblings. Mr. Friend started his working career at age 16 working in a tomato canning factory in Morristown. He had also been employed with General Electric in Shelbyville and retired as a welder from Wellman’s in Shelbyville. John served in the National Guard and was honorably discharged from duty on August 31, 1968. He had obtained his pilot’s license and had many hours logged in as a pilot. He enjoyed staying up to date on technology and trades, always ready to do repair work. He and Ann enjoyed the company of their parrot Fonzie who is now 45 years old. John’s wishes were to be cremated and a graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 23 at 12p.m. at the Stipp’s Hill Cemetery near Rushville where he will be laid to rest next to Ann. Memorials may be given to the cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.
